Aerosol delivery of vaccines is better. Traditional vaccines require
intramuscular injection to provide a systemic serological response
producing immediately-acting antibodies and longer-term cellular
defenses (e.g., memory cells) to prevent re-infection. These
bloodstream-based mechanisms are less effective against the many
infectious agents such as viruses which are spread through airborne
particles. In response to airborne attacks, the human body has
developed a highly effective protection mechanism, the mucosal immune
system, which is comprised of immunologically active tissues that guard
our sinus and throat passages. AeroVax™ capitalizes on this site-
specific immunity by delivering vaccines via aerosol directly to the upper
respiratory tract. Early models indicate that aerosol vaccination may be
superior to injection for inducing protective immunity against respiratory
pathogens such as influenza and may provide broader coverage against
mutated viruses such as H1N1 (Swine Flu).
